This Trending Tuesday is all about wearing dresses for fall!!!
Ok…so nothing really that new; we’ve all been wearing dresses during fall forever. And we all know the obvious ways to transition a dress to fall: wear tights, layer a jacket/sweater overtop, wear with knee high boots, and more obviously wear sweater dresses. But do you ever feel like your outfit combinations are played out…kind of like that “new song” you heard 10 times on the radio during your drive to work.
So how do you keep a classic fall wardrobe staple, like a dress, fresh? Simple: change it up. But is that really that simple? How many ways can you style a dress and still stay warm in cold weather? Well today I will show you 2 new trending ways to style your dress for fall 2016.
First things first…
We always think of dresses as the only layer, the end-all be-all of the outfit (everything else you add is an accessory, i.e. tights, boots, jacket, etc.). But it doesn’t have to be this way. In fact, if you want your dress outfits to stay relevant this fall/winter you’re going to need to change that way of thinking. A dress is no longer a solo piece; instead think of it as a layer! Yes that’s right, layer your dress!
1. Layer it Over Jeans
Yup, you read that right, layer it over jeans. This is the HOT new way to wear your dress. I know it seems like a definite yuck, but trust me and try it. It’s a great way to keep your legs warm and create a dynamic look. It adds another texture and layer to your outfit (and jeans are so much warmer than tights)!
Tip: Try this look with multiple dress and pant styles. Just make sure the silhouette of your dress and pants/jeans match in proportions. For example: wear a boxy, narrower dress over skinnies (shown above) or a trapeze dress over slim pants (some volume); when your dress has more volume or movement you want to pick a slim pant vs. skinny (otherwise you’ll look like a potato on toothpicks).
2. Layer it Over a Long Sleeve Top
Put on a warmer shirt (button down, turtleneck, thin sweater) and throw the tank dress on top. This idea is a little less crazy but still a fresh take on a fall dress outfit (a spin on the classic dress with jacket). This will create a new dynamic to the outfit. Your dress will look that much more interesting (finally you get to show the top half of your dress), not to mention keep you warm!
Tip: Try this layered look with multiple dress styles (tank, strapless, or even a sleeved dress). Any dress can work with this look all you need to do is try. Also try it with various shirt styles (a sweater, turtleneck, or just a plain long sleeve) anything will work…it’s just nice to have that extra layer and warmth!
